| Brazil Implements New Import Requirements for Lumber | |
| Brazil has implemented new requirements for the importation of white ash and white oak lumber from the United States. According to Normative Instruction No. 63 and 64, respectively, imports of white ash and white oak lumber produced in the United States now require a Phytosanitary Certificate with an additional declaration that the wood has undergone a drying process for 720 hours, at 160oF (70.88oC). The lumber is also required to be bark-free. The new requirements took effect on November 8, 2002, but only recently came to light, since Brazil did not notify them to the World Trade Organization. U.S. exports of white ash and white oak lumber to Brazil were valued at $131,000 and $35,000, respectively, in 2002. |
