Export Sales Highlights

This summary is based on reports from exporters for the period April 25-May 1, 2008. 

Wheat:  Net sales of 178,800 metric tons were 2 percent above the previous week, but 22 percent under the prior 4-week average.  Increases reported for Mexico (34,700 MT), Chile (33,300 MT), unknown destinations (33,200 MT), Nigeria (31,600 MT, including 6,900 MT switched from unknown destinations), Japan (29,500 MT), and Brazil (26,700 MT), were partially offset by decreases for Colombia (28,000 MT), Cuba (25,000 MT), Egypt (5,500 MT), Trinidad (5,100 MT), and Venezuela (5,000 MT).  Net sales of 312,900 MT for delivery in 2008/09 were mainly for Guatemala (82,000 MT), unknown destinations (74,300 MT), Cuba (50,000 MT), Peru (41,000 MT), and Mexico (39,000 MT).  Decreases were reported for Kenya (70,000 MT).  Exports of 631,900 MT were 10 percent above the previous week and 15 percent over the prior 4-week average.  The primary destinations were Japan (137,700 MT), Egypt (84,500 MT), Nigeria (76,100 MT), Indonesia (60,000 MT), South Korea (46,400 MT), and Taiwan (44,000 MT).  

Corn:  Net sales of 337,200 MT--a marketing-year low--were 39 percent below the previous week and 50 percent under the prior 4-week average.  Increases reported for Japan (185,600 MT), Mexico (102,400 MT), Colombia (72,300 MT, including 42,600 MT switched from unknown destinations), Venezuela (58,800 MT), and Cuba (25,200 MT), were partially offset by decreases for Taiwan (52,400 MT), Jamaica (50,000 MT), the Dominican Republic (32,700 MT), and Egypt (16,500 MT).  Net sales of 63,300 MT for delivery in 2008/09 were for Mexico (62,200 MT) and Honduras (1,100 MT).  Exports of 937,500 MT were 7 percent below the previous week and 16 percent under the prior 4-week average.  The primary destinations were Japan (190,700 MT), Taiwan (152,500 MT), Mexico (151,200 MT), South Korea (112,600 MT), Colombia (82,800 MT), and Venezuela (55,000 MT). 

Barley:  Net sales of 1,200 MT were reported for Japan.  Exports of 29,900 MT were to Japan (25,400 MT) and Canada (4,500 MT).

Sorghum:  Net sales of 50,500 MT were 11 percent above the previous week, but 35 percent below the prior 4-week average.  Increases reported for Spain (60,000 MT, switched from unknown destinations), Mexico (44,900 MT), and Norway (27,500 MT, including 25,000 MT switched from unknown destinations), were partially offset by decreases for unknown destinations (85,000 MT).  Net sales of 19,200 MT for delivery in 2008/09 were for Japan (10,200 MT) and Mexico (9,000 MT).  Exports of 42,300 MT--a marketing-year low--were 58 percent below the previous week and 64 percent under the prior 4-week average.  The destinations were Norway (27,500 MT), Japan (11,200 MT), and Mexico (3,600 MT). 

Rice:  Net sales of 102,500 MT were 24 percent above the previous week and 10 percent over the prior 4-week average.  Increases were reported for Mexico (29,000 MT), Nicaragua (16,500 MT), Japan (13,400 MT), Jamaica (9,300 MT), Honduras (8,900 MT), and Guatemala (8,000 MT).  Exports of 97,900 were 91 percent above the previous week and 40 percent over the prior 4-week average.  The primary destinations were Japan (52,000 MT), Mexico (17,200 MT), Guatemala (6,000 MT), Canada (4,700 MT), and El Salvador (3,300 MT). 

Soybeans:  Net sales of 41,000 MT--a marketing-year low--were down 87 percent from the previous week and 91 percent from the prior 4-week average.  Increases reported for the Germany (60,200 MT, including 60,000 MT switched from unknown destinations), Taiwan (18,100 MT), Mexico (12,500 MT), Colombia (8,000 MT), and Indonesia (4,800 MT), were partially offset by decreases for unknown destinations (69,000 MT).  Net sales of 239,600 MT for delivery in 2008/09 were for unknown destinations (118,000 MT), China (55,000 MT), Japan (50,000 MT), and Mexico (16,600 MT).  Exports of 362,000 MT were down 34 percent from the previous week and 25 percent from the prior 4-week average.  The primary destinations were China (127,600 MT), Mexico (72,500 MT), Germany (60,200 MT), Japan (29,200 MT), and Taiwan (26,400 MT).    

Soybean Cake and Meal:  Net sales of 122,200 MT were nearly two and one-tenth times the previous week, but 3 percent under the prior 4-week average.  Increases were reported for Venezuela (60,000 MT), the United Kingdom (28,400 MT, including 30,000 MT switched from France and decreases of 1,600 MT), Algeria (25,000 MT, switched from unknown destinations), Colombia (21,100 MT), and Canada (19,100 MT).  Net sales of 12,100 MT for delivery in 2008/09 were for Canada (11,600 MT) and Nicaragua (500 MT).  Exports of 216,400 MT were 71 percent above the previous week and 51 percent over the prior 4-week average.  The primary destinations were Germany (30,100 MT), the United Kingdom (28,400 MT), Australia (27,500 MT), Algeria (25,000 MT), Canada (21,000 MT), and Colombia (20,000 MT). 

Soybean Oil:  Net sales of 11,900 MT were 35 percent above the previous week, but 18 percent under the prior 4-week average.  Increases were reported for Venezuela (5,000 MT), Colombia (3,500 MT), Mexico (1,700 MT), and El Salvador (1,000 MT).  Exports of 11,500 MT were primarily to Cuba (5,000 MT), Jamaica (4,300 MT), Mexico (1,100 MT), and Canada (900 MT). 

Cotton:  Net Upland sales of 563,900 running bales were 12 percent below the previous week, but 58 percent above the prior 4-week average.  Increases were mainly for China (311,000 RB), with lesser amounts for Turkey (53,000 RB), Indonesia (38,800 RB), Thailand (31,600 RB), Vietnam (22,400 RB), and Taiwan (19,400 RB).  Net sales of 94,400 RB for delivery in 2008/09 were mainly for Mexico (78,100 RB).  Exports of 269,700 RB were up 69 percent from the previous week and 10 percent from the prior 4-week average.  The primary destinations were China (101,400 RB), Turkey (38,300 RB), Mexico (35,500 RB), Indonesia (26,300 RB), Thailand (18,100 RB), and Japan (7,800 RB).  Net American Pima sales of 22,200 RB were primarily for China (13,100 RB), India (3,600 RB), Germany (1,500 RB), and Bangladesh (1,500 RB).  Net sales of 1,500 RB for delivery in 2008/09 were for Germany.  Exports of 22,100 RB were mainly to China (7,400 RB), India (3,600 RB), South Korea (3,000 RB), and Pakistan (2,800 RB).   

Hides and Skins:  Net sales of 839,100 pieces were up 88 percent from the previous week and 56 percent from the prior 4-week average.  Whole cattle hide sales of 834,900 pieces--a marketing year high--were mainly for China (477,400 pieces), South Korea (123,100 pieces), Hong Kong (69,600 pieces), Taiwan (66,900 pieces), and Vietnam (30,300 pieces).  Exports of 613,800 pieces were up 59 percent from the previous week and 32 percent from the prior 4-week average.  Whole cattle hide exports of 609,200 pieces--a marketing-year high--were primary to China (263,900 pieces), South Korea (128,900 pieces), Hong Kong (46,700 pieces), Taiwan (44,300 pieces), and Thailand (40,900 pieces). 

Net sales of 124,500 wet blues were down 47 percent from the previous week and 27 percent from the prior 4-week average.  Increases were mainly for China (64,400 unsplit and 1,600 grain splits), Mexico (14,500 grain splits and 5,000 unsplit), Hong Kong (15,800 unsplit), and Taiwan (10,700 unsplit). Exports of 123,700 hides were down 35 percent from the previous week and 22 percent from the prior 4-week average.  The primary destinations were China (29,800 unsplit and 6,300 grain splits), Hong Kong (22,900 unsplit), Mexico (13,500 grain splits and 1,000 unsplit), South Korea (11,300 unsplit), and the Dominican Republic (8,600 grain splits and 2,400 unsplit).  Net sales of splits totaling 864,100 pounds resulted as increases for Vietnam (792,000 pounds), Turkey (100,000 pounds), and Hong Kong (82,000 pounds), were partially offset by decreases for Italy (92,000 pounds) and China (17,900 pounds).  Exports of 1,368,100 pounds were up 13 percent from the previous week and 55 percent from the prior 4-week average.  The destinations were China (554,100 pounds), Hong Kong (544,000 pounds), and Italy (270,000 pounds). 

Beef:  Net sales of 8,500 MT were primarily for Canada (3,300 MT), Japan (2,800 MT), Mexico (2,100 MT), Taiwan (500 MT), and Russia (200 MT). Exports of 9,400 MT were mainly to Mexico (4,800 MT), Canada (1,600 MT), Japan (1,100 MT), Vietnam (500 MT), and Taiwan (500 MT).
