USDA school visit with Project Concern International

The fortified cookies and jicaro mix are stored
at the school. Teachers at all of the recipient schools maintain records of the
quantity of food received and distributed. Management of the cookies and jicaro
mix is very practical and does not make the teachers’ work more difficult.
In addition, the jicaro mix and cookies at the school does not require
cooking or firewood and therefore does not contribute to deforestation in the
communities.

The jicaro mix comes in 25 pound bags and each box contains fortified cookie
rations.
The teachers of Emanuel Mongalo have creatively
incorporated the empty fortified cookie boxes and jicaro mix bags into their
teaching lessons.

Above, the fortified cookie boxes are used as educational cubbies where
learning materials are stored.

Empty jicaro mix bags are used to create pouches for students to store their
class supplies such as pencils and crayons.
Fortified cookies and jicaro drink enjoyed by
Emanuel Mongalo students. This
school breakfast provides 25 percent of a child’s daily caloric needs.

During USDA’s visit, PCI and USDA formally donated a dictionary, an
encyclopedia, traditional Nicaraguan storybooks, globes, water filters and educational
supplies to each school participating in the GFEI program.
All aspects of the GFEI project are implemented in close coordination
with the local Ministry of Education.
