Japan's Safeguard on Pork Imports

Increased pork imports in April and May have created concern that Japan's pork safeguard will be triggered when June import data is compiled. The April-June quarter safeguard trigger level is set at 183,850 tons, with only 45,550 tons remaining before it is filled, yet June imports have averaged 51,000 tons the past 3 years. If triggered, the resultant increased minimum import price would be in effect from August 2001 through March 2002.
