Russia Takes Steps to Strengthen Its Meat Sector
Russian statistics show 2002 beef, pork, and poultry imports at $2.1 billion, close to the record 1997 record of $2.5 billion. However, the introduction of quotas in 2003 will likely reduce reliance on meat imports and stimulate domestic production. Russia's total meat production is forecast to increase 5 percent in 2003.
