Russia

The largest country in the world, Russia also has one of the fastest growing economies in the world, thanks to high world energy prices and Russia’s status as the world’s largest energy exporter. Within recent years, consumer demand has increased faster than the economy as a whole, driving high rates of import growth. Russia is one of the leading export markets for U.S. poultry and a growing market for pork and beef. Russia comprised 30 percent of U.S. global poultry exports in CY 2007, valued at $750 million, and was again the largest U.S. poultry export market in 2008. U.S. pork and beef exports to Russia also increased dramatically in recent years. Russia is attempting to accede to the WTO, a process that began in 1993 and has closed bilateral negotiations with nearly all members of the Working Party on Russia’s accession, with the exception of Georgia. However, their accession process has recently slowed in the wake of Russian actions to restrict trade. The United States and Russia continue to negotiate trade issues, and resolution of outstanding trade issues remains a top priority.
