Philippines
The
Philippines is a key market in Southeast Asia for
U.S. agricultural exports, with sales of over $1.28
billion in 2009. The Philippines is the 15th largest market for U.S.
agricultural products. The United States is the top
food and beverage supplier to the Philippines,
although competition is intensifying. The
Philippines joined the WTO in 1995, the year the
country became a net food importer. The Philippines
has a relatively open trading system and has some of
the lowest applied tariffs in the Southeast Asian
region. The well-educated, largely
English-speaking, and rapidly growing population of
the Philippines makes it a prime market for U.S.
agricultural goods. However, despite economic
growth since the mid-1980s, poverty and
infrastructure issues continue to be significant
concerns.
