Pakistan

Despite high levels of poverty, Pakistan has the potential to be a good market for U.S. agricultural products. Imports of U.S. agricultural, fisheries and forestry products have averaged between $200 million to $300 million over the past five years, consisting primarily of cotton, wheat and planting seeds. Recently returned to democratic rule, the government of Pakistan faces a number of economic and political issues. Pakistan has been a food aid recipient under the Food for Progress program. Longer term, the USDA has a number of technical and scientific exchange programs to help build Pakistan’s agricultural development, focusing on subjects including biotechnology, biosecurity and animal and plant disease control.
