Zealand is a parliamentary democracy of
approximately 4 million people located in the South
Pacific Ocean (southeast of Australia). Over the
past 20 years, the New Zealand government has
transformed the country from an agrarian economy
dependent on concessionary British market access
into a more industrialized, free market economy that
is competitive around the globe. Agriculture is the
corner stone of the New Zealand economy accounting
for approximately 5
percent of GDP, and nearly 50 percent of New
Zealand’s land area is used for primary agricultural
production. New Zealand is the world's largest
exporter of dairy products, sheep meat, venison and
kiwifruit. The United States and New Zealand
communicate on trade issues under the Trade and
Investment Framework Agreement.
