Afghanistan

Afghanistan was once a major exporter of dried fruit and nuts, but decades of war have devastated the infrastructure, leaving Afghanistan one of the poorest countries in Asia, with per capita annual income of $1,000. USDA provides food assistance to Afghanistan through the Food for Progress (FFP) and McGovern-Dole child nutrition programs. USDA’s other programs in Afghanistan focus on long-term reconstruction, including deployment of USDA advisors to Provincial Recovery Teams; and technical exchanges funded under several different grant programs. USDA also provides technical guidance and training to government and academic agricultural specialists in livestock health, animal disease control, forest management and agricultural extension. Additional activities are funded through the sales of FFP donated commodities.
