November 2001 Edition:
Exports Off to Strong Start Towards 70-year High

U.S. cotton exports are off to an unusually strong start in MY 2001/02. In the last 70 years, exports have reached the current forecast of 9.4 million 480-lb bales only once before in MY 1994/95. For the past 15 marketing years 14 percent of total marketing year exports have been shipped by week 13, on average, with a standard deviation of 4 percentage points. However, accumulated exports this marketing year are 25.5 percent of the forecast total, nearly 2.4 million bales; almost twice the year-ago level. Cumulatively, exports are up 950,000 bales from last year - a threefold increase to India, Turkey, Indonesia, Taiwan, Thailand, and Korea. These six countries are only forecast to increase their combined total imports by 4 percent, 415,000 bales, from MY 2000/01. Thus the current U.S. export level indicates a substantial increase in U.S. market share in these countries.
