U.S. Exports and Sales Continue at Strong Levels

Weekly exports during the last two months of MY2000/01 (Aug-July) averaged 150,000 running bales, nearly 60 percent above the 15-year average. Strong exports have continued into 2001/02. Weekly exports for the first five weeks have averaged a record 183,860 running bales, more than double the 15-year average of 81,300. Total commitments at the beginning of 2001/02 (sales made last year for this marketing year and roll-over of last year's outstanding sales) were 4.7 million running bales, 50 percent above the 15-year average. Strong sales since the beginning of the year have increased total commitments to 5.4 million bales, the second highest level after 4 weeks of the marketing year.
