China Production
Increase In Line with Growth in Consumption

This month's USDA 2000/01
production estimate for China shows a 2- million bale increase
from the previous estimate and a 14-percent increase from
1999/00. The increase reflects a preliminary estimate by the
China National Statistics Bureau (NBS), the official government
agency for estimating crop production. Despite the increase in
production, China's consumption is expected to exceed production
by 3.0 million bales. However, abundant stocks will limit imports
in the short term, but the consumption/production gap will
continue to tighten stocks and lead to increased imports.
