Civil Service
The Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS) employs approximately 550 Civil Servants in Washington D.C. Civil Service positions are based on the General Schedule (GS) or Senior Executive Service (SES) scale.

GS positions range from grades GS-1 through GS-15. Senior managers above the GS-15 level are members of the SES. The majority of FAS employees occupy GS positions.

Your position level is determined by education and experience. In general, college graduates qualify for a GS-5, those with masters degrees qualify for a GS-9, and candidates with PhDs qualify for GS-11 positions.

FAS positions utilize a wide range of skills reflected in position titles, such as international economists, agricultural economists, marketing specialists, international trade specialists, and management analysts. Titles vary according to education and the nature of work being done.

Civil Service employees are eligible for numerous benefits including health insurance, life insurance and retirement. Full time employees are required to work 80 hours biweekly within one of the approved work schedules.
