Russian Grain Supplies Dwindle as Harvest Drops to 45-Year Low
October 1998
Russia grain production for 1998/99 is forecast to fall to its lowest level since 1953. Severe drought in the Volga Valley and Urals, combined with a 3.5-million-hectare drop in sown area, has reduced estimated output to 52.0 million tons, down from 87.7 million last year. Wheat production is estimated at 28.5 million tons, down 35 percent from last year, and estimated barley output is forecast to fall 50 percent, to 10.0 million tons. The ten-year slide in livestock inventories is forecast to continue as farmers contend with increasingly tight feed-grain reserves.
